Tried & Tested Snacks: February Edition

With new products on the market almost every week, it can be overwhelmingly difficult to decide which to try first. To help make the decision process slightly easier, i’ve tried and tested five products this month, find the verdict below.

1. Mars Frozen M&M’s Peanut Sticks

It’s about time Mars brought out a frozen version of their best-selling chocolate. These individually wrapped ice-cream bars contain a creamy milk chocolate ice-cream encased in a hard-chocolate outer layer with crushed m&m shell throughout with the perfect hint of peanut butter.

Verdict: So good I could eat the whole four.

Where to find: Woolworths & Coles freezer isle.

2. Gelato Messina Tim Tams: Ice Coffee

Australian biscuit brand Arnott’s have collaborated with Gelato Messina for their second Tim Tam range. This time the concept behind the three flavours was to store them in the fridge and eat them cold. The flavours included Choc Cherry Coconut, Iced Coffee and Turkish Delight.

Verdict: Personally I’m a Tim Tam Slam fan, so eating my Tim Tams straight out of the fridge was entering new territory. That said, the flavours were pretty true to their name. Ice coffee was hands down the crowd favourite.

Where to find: Woolworths & Coles biscuit isle.

3. Salted Caramel Almond Milk

Australia’s Own Foods Salted Caramel Almond Milk is nutty, sweet and (slightly) salty all at once. It slides down your throat with ease, exciting even the bleakest of taste buds. Best enjoyed ice cold.

Verdict: Free from gluten, dairy and soy, you’d be surprised at how good this milk tastes. Get creative and add it to a smoothie. Breakfast never sounded so good.

Where to find: IGA & Specialty Food Stores.

4. Fantastic Rice Mini’s

For an alternative to Arnott’s Shapes, these mini rice wheels are the perfect bite-sized snack. Flavours include Chicken, Honey & Soy or Chilli Salt & Pepper. For a mini wheel of rice, the flavour sure does pack a punch, and the texture is almost Twistie-like, making them hard to put down. Arguably Honey & Soy was my favourite of the two, although the Chicken was a close first.

Verdict: Ate the entire box on the car ride home from Woolworths.

Where to find: Woolworths biscuit isle.

5. The Golden Gaytime Sanga

Ditching the stick, the Golden Gaytime has been transformed into the most epic ice cream sandwich you’ll want to get your hands on ASAP. It boasts a sweet carmel-ey honey cream on the inside, and a classic biscuit cover on the outside. The biscuit has been ramped up by ‘improved crumb technology’, with a higher crumb density, so your tastebuds may go into serious shock.

Verdict: This is one serious game-changer in the ice-cream department. The perfect balance of ice cream and biscuit, I don’t know why you’re still reading this and not getting your hands on one.

Where to find: IGA freezer isle.

Your Cringe-Free Guide To Valentines Day

It’s the only day of the year that we have this love-hate relationship with. While those in love tend to get swept up in the fluffy toys and red roses, the other half spend the day in misery, avoiding any celebration of the kind. But whether you’re spending this Valentine’s Day with your guy friend, girl friend or four-legged friend, I’ve come up with a few cringe-free ways to help get you through the day.

Roses Die, But Donuts Fill The Heart

Forget forking out fifty dollars on a bunch of red roses that won’t make it to the end of the week. The geniuses at MOP Donuts have come up with a ‘Donut Bouquet’. Ten of their delicious donuts all dressed up like a bunch of roses, but edible. Although the chances of these lasting longer than a fresh bunch of flowers may be slim…

Forget Fifty Shades

Single or taken, nobody needs to sit through a whole ninety-minutes of Mr Grey and his accomplice Anastasia. Instead, pack a picnic and take your partner in crime along to see The Greatest Showman at the Moonlight Outdoor Cinema. A limited number of Bean Beds are available but highly recommended to make your night even more relaxed.

Fringe Binge

Just incase you needed yet another excuse to get around Fringe World 2018, why not check out a show. Start off at Noodle Palace for a few drinks and see where the night takes you. There’s a few comedy shows targeted at Valentine’s Day that are sure to make you laugh so hard you pee your pants. You can check the shows out here. And if you’re feeling up to letting out your inner child I highly recommend you take a look at PlaySpace.

Swipe Right At The Aviary

What could be better than spending your Valentine’s Day night on a rooftop bar with a live DJ, cheap drinks and free entry? The Aviary is hosting their annual V-Day bash, and they’re promising some serious match-making and super likes. But if you’re not looking for love, then I’d suggest heading along for the drink specials and city view.

Flora & Fauna’s New Menu Has Dropped

Pretty dishes are all the hype at this hole-in-the-wall cafe.

Nestled in one of Perth’s few laneways just off Aberdeen street, Flora & Fauna serves up some of the prettiest dishes our city has to offer. After opening their doors only a few short years ago, the tiny cafe has acquired quite the large following. And they’ve got something for everyone.

Serving up Micrology coffee from the Perth-based roasters as well as fresh-pressed juices and a range of fine teas, your thirst is sure to be quenched. But the real winner here is the all-day brunch menu, which now includes vegan waffles (don’t knock them until you try them). Topped with Canadian maple syrup, vegan chocolate mousse and dozens of edible flowers, they’re they perfect guilt-free sweet treat.

For the regulars, the banana bread is still very much available (and still just as good), but sadly the smashed avo on turkish bread has been replaced with a beetroot and hummus number – same same but different. Other menu items include the classic apple crumble topped with oats, and the slow-cooked beans (with a side of organic multigrain bread).

Don’t forget to check out the daily selection of sweet treats inside, if you’re lucky enough to visit on a day she’s baked her famous choc chunk cookies, make sure you grab a few for the road.

Perth CBD Welcomes Short Order Burger Co

Gracing the Perth CBD with their presence, Short Order Burger Co is serving up some of the tastiest burgers around town, and they’re here to stay.

The masterminds behind these burgers who have been dishing them out at The Mantle in Free recently opened up shop. And it’s no surprise that they’ve hit the ground running.

Premium grass fed beef patty with smoked mozzarella, American cheddar, caramelised onion, pickles, maple candied bacon and whole egg may, or more commonly known as the ‘BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger’ is just one of the few burgers you can enjoy at their now permanent shop.

If that didn’t get your mouth salivating, I honestly don’t know what will.

For more off-the-menu goodies and other info, check out their Facebook page.

Short Order Burger Co is open 7 days a week from 11am – 9pm

UNIQLO Is Coming To Perth

About to open their fifteenth store in Australia, Japanese fast fashion giants Uniqlo are finally bringing their everyday basics to Perth.

Famed for its innovative and affordable basics, Uniqlo’s range will include men’s, women’s and children’s clothes in a plethora of materials like Suprima Cotton, Heattech and Extra Fine Merino to name a few.

The clothing retailer will be setting up shop in Plaza Arcade on the Murray Street mall by mid-year 2018, and will house over 1290sqm of floor space. It’s safe to say there will be no shortage of duck-feathered puffer jackets or long-sleeve thermals.

Following this news, the Japanese retailer announced a special collaboration with Finnish design house, Marimekko. The womenswear capsule will be available in Australian stores and online from March 29, and there promises to be plenty of polkadots. Until then, you can browse their website here and formulate your winter wardrobe shopping list!
