Nestled in the heart of Northbridge, Perth’s own Chinatown offers up some of the best Asian cuisine around. But if you’re not a local visitor here, figuring out where to eat can often be a challenge. Thankfully (with some help) I’ve managed to pick out the best dishes around the area that are sure to give you the ultimate Chinatown experience.
For an authentic southern Vietnamese food experience, Phi Yen is all that and more. It boasts a relaxed vibe in an easygoing spot where you can grab a rice-paper roll to-go or take a seat street side and soak in Chinatown. It’s owned and run by a husband and wife duo who use fresh ingredients to bring you the best of Southern Vietnam on a plate.
Try: Hu Tieu Xao Ga Hay Bo – Chicken breast stir fried with rice noodle, bean sprout, chives, egg, carrot strips and onion.
205 Brisbane St, Northbridge
You know its good Ramen when you have to fight your way through the door. But what makes this place worth the wait is their noodles. The springy texture they hold and the broth they sit in will have you dreaming of ramen for days. Not to mention they’ve got 4 types of noodles (including squid ink infused). More importantly, their broth has this layered sweetness to it. It’s salty and sweet all at the same time, leaving your tastebuds satisfied.
Try: Shio Ramen – Ramen in a shio (salt) flavoured soup with a slice of roast pork
191/580 Hay St Perth
This place offers up some of the best Vietnamese dishes around. Their deep fried tofu is the perfect heart-melter for any vegetarian, and their pho is un-pho-gettably amazing. It’s recommended you go with a group so you can try every dish on the menu, but if you feel like going solo you’ll have a better chance at snapping up a table.
Try: Deep fried prawns on crispy noodles
457 William St, Northbridge
Big Bowl Noodle And Roast
If it isn’t blindingly obvious, these guys are a noodle house, so you can expect only the best when it comes to their noodle game. Made fresh on site, this little hole-in-the-wall noodle joint has not one but three noodle making machines, which they use to so churn out oodles of noodles. But surprisingly enough, their pork and prawn dumplings have copped quite the raving review.
Try: Chicken stir fried noodle with XO sauce
408 William St, Northbridge
As the name suggests, this eatery does duck (and it does it good). I’m not exaggerating when I say Good Fortune has some of the best duck around. And if you don’t believe me, drive past on a weekend and you’ll see the queue of hungry individuals waiting to be seated and get their hands on some roasted meats.
Try: Boneless Roast Duck (technically not a noodle dish, but a must-try)
354 William St, Perth
